Charles,

Thanks for bringing me back to reality. It annoys me that they control the rules of the game. Even though I'm enthusiastic about Revolution Money, I'm still pushing for some credit card legislation that makes fees and rates more transparent.

Triston,

I'm not sure that we'll see an end to that duopoly anytime soon. The credit card (and increasingly the debit card) running on Visa/MC rails is really well entrenched and it would take something really unique to diminish their importance.

Could this really mean the end to the Visa/MasterCard monopoly? Get ready for lower prices for consumers as well as merchants!

This is a GREAT idea and will definitely take off. I used to be the CFO for a restaurant chain and we ran into an unbelievable problem with Visa that is wide-spread and rarely discussed in public. The incidence of massive amounts of credit card data being stolen from merchants and sold over the internet is a huge problem for the credit card companies. (What I learned is the piece of plastic in your wallet is a defective product.) When Visa/MC discover this has occurred, they threaten to fine the merchant right into bankruptcy and cut off all access to credit cards. It is very hard for a company working on perfecting tuna tartar and scheduling employees for shifts to keep up with the latest and greatest criminals ripping off credit card data. Never mind - Visa needs to punish someone (and hard) and they choose their customers.

Business will love this - start with them and problem solved.
